October in Galicia (with string quartet, parts)

  • Surreal poems by Ewald Murrer
  • Song cycle in 3 movements
  • Soprano, string quartet, & fixed audio
  • Duration: ca. 13 min.

This song cycle sets poems by Czech poet Ewald Murrer, from his novel-in-verse The Diary of Mr. Pinke, translated into English by Alicie Pist’ková.  He tells a story of fantastic events in a Jewish village in the historical Eastern European region of Galicia (now Ukraine and Poland).  It is in three movements—“October 1st,” “October 4th,” and “October 23rd.”  The fixed audio part consists of an organ recording layered and lightly manipulated electronically.  Originally composed for chamber ensemble in 2009, this version was created for and premiered by Karen Siegel and the Pur ti Miro Quartet in 2013.  Please contact me to purchase the audio files.
