Physical Impossibility: A Jewish Reflection on Scientific Mystery is a five-movement work pairing excerpts from the Musaf Shabbat prayer service with original poems about scientific questions and theories. The five movements are each about different areas of science—physics, linguistics, psychology and genetics, astronomy, and ecology. They delve into questions ranging from the incompatibility of classical physics and quantum physics to how trees and fungi interact cooperatively. One movement explores the concept of inherited trauma, as it applies to the children of Holocaust and pogrom survivors. Composed for C4: the Choral Composer/Conductor Collective, it will be premiered by the ensemble on March 14th & 15th, 2025, with each movement conducted by a different individual on the C4 conducting team.
