That Moment
For a few years I’ve been developing what I like to call a Collaborative Commission model for new choral works. I was delighted to work on such a project recently for and with the Schwob Singers of Columbus State University, directed by David Hahn, and I look forward to attending the premiere on March 13th.
Like conventional choral commissions, this one started with a conversation between David and myself. We agreed on the parameters for the new work, including the theme of mindfulness. We arranged online meetings with small groups of student singers as well as one full-group meeting. In these gatherings the students shared their perspectives on mindfulness, the distractions and challenges in their lives, and what helps them feel in the moment. I was struck by both the enormous pressures these students feel as well as the resilience and maturity with which they meet their challenges.
I then wrote a poem that expresses the students’ thoughts, often in direct quotation, and follows a journey from overwhelming stress to finding connection and being present through music-making. I’m grateful to David for trusting me with this unconventional approach, and to the students for their openness with me. Please find the poem below.
The score will be published shortly after the premiere on March 13, 2025.
